Norman Conquest
The Norman Conquest was the invasion and occupation of England by William, Duke of Normandy, in 1066 and the following years. William defeated and killed Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066 and was crowned on Christmas Day. Risings were suppressed by 1071, and a Norman aristocracy and church hierarchy replaced the English elite.
