Norman Kirk

1923–1974 · 20th century

Norman Kirk was Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1972 until his death in office in 1974, leading the Third Labour Government. He pursued a more independent foreign policy, recognising the People's Republic of China, withdrawing troops from Vietnam and sending naval frigates to protest against French nuclear tests at Moruroa in 1973. His sudden death at the age of 51 shocked the country.
