Auckland
Auckland is the largest city of New Zealand, on an isthmus between two harbours in the north of the North Island. Governor William Hobson chose the site as the colonial capital in 1840, and it remained the capital until Wellington replaced it in 1865. It grew into the country's main commercial centre and port and has the largest Polynesian population of any city in the world.
