Australia
Australia is a continent and country in the southern hemisphere. Britain began colonising it in 1788 with a penal settlement at Sydney, and several self-governing colonies developed in the nineteenth century, uniting as the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. It became one of the British Empire's major dominions and settler societies.
