Austral Islands
The Austral Islands are the southernmost island group of French Polynesia in the South Pacific, including Rurutu, Tubuai, Rimatara, Raivavae and Rapa. Their chiefs came under Tahitian influence in the 19th century, and France annexed the islands one by one between 1880 and 1901. Their small population lives mainly from farming and fishing.
