Franco-Tahitian War

1844–1847 · 19th century

The Franco-Tahitian War was fought between France and Tahitians loyal to Queen Pōmare IV after Admiral Dupetit-Thouars imposed a French protectorate in 1842 and then deposed the queen. Tahitian fighters resisted from the mountains while the queen took refuge on Raiatea. After the French took the last strongholds in 1846, Pōmare IV returned in 1847 and accepted the protectorate.
