HMS Bounty

1789 · 18th century · Also known as Bounty

HMS Bounty was a Royal Navy ship sent under William Bligh to collect breadfruit plants on Tahiti. In April 1789 part of the crew, led by Fletcher Christian, mutinied and set Bligh adrift; some mutineers settled on Pitcairn Island, while others stayed on Tahiti, where they served chiefs such as Tu, the future Pōmare I. Bligh sailed some 6,700 kilometres in an open boat to Timor.
