Papeete
Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia, on the north-west coast of Tahiti. It grew around a harbour used by whalers and traders in the early 19th century and became the seat of the Pōmare monarchy and then of the French administration after the protectorate of 1842. It is the territory's main port, and its international airport lies in neighbouring Faaa.
