Protectorate

A protectorate is a territory that retains its own ruler and some internal autonomy but is placed under the control and protection of a stronger state, usually in foreign affairs and defence. The British Empire used protectorates widely, for example in Northern Nigeria from 1900, which covered much of the Sokoto Caliphate. New Oyo, the successor of the Oyo Empire, was also a British protectorate.
