Sokoto Caliphate

Also known as Sokoto

The Sokoto Caliphate was an Islamic state in what is now northern Nigeria, founded through the jihad led by Usman dan Fodio from 1804. It united Hausa and Fulani emirates under the caliph at Sokoto and became one of the largest states in nineteenth-century Africa. It was conquered by the British in the early twentieth century, and accounts of the Oyo Empire note its role in Oyo's decline.
