British Empire

Also known as British

The British Empire comprised the dominions, colonies, protectorates and other territories ruled or administered by Britain from the late sixteenth to the twentieth century. At its height it was the largest empire in history, covering about a quarter of the world's land. It conquered or absorbed many states covered by the site, including the Sikh, Ashanti, Benin and Sokoto polities, and decolonised mainly after the Second World War.
