Ashanti Empire
The Ashanti Empire was an Akan state in present-day Ghana, founded by Osei Tutu around the end of the seventeenth century with its capital at Kumasi. Its power rested on gold, trade, including the Atlantic slave trade, and a strong army, and the Golden Stool symbolised its unity. After a series of wars with Britain it was annexed in 1901.
