Osei Tutu I
Osei Tutu I was the founder of the Ashanti Empire, uniting the Akan chiefdoms of the forest zone of present-day Ghana around the turn of the eighteenth century. Leading the Oyoko clan's state of Kumasi, he worked with the priest Okomfo Anokye, whose Golden Stool became the symbol of Asante unity. Their victory over Denkyira at Feyiase in 1701 established Asante independence.
