Elmina
Elmina is a town on the coast of present-day Ghana, site of São Jorge da Mina, the castle built by the Portuguese in 1482. Later taken by the Dutch, it was a major centre of the gold and slave trades, and its trade relations, including the Dutch connection, mattered to the Ashanti Empire.
