Elmina Note
The Elmina Note was a document entitling an African power to a regular rent paid by the Dutch for the land of their castle at Elmina on the Gold Coast. Held at first by Denkyira, it passed to the Ashanti Empire after its victory over Denkyira in 1701. Asante later used it to claim overlordship of Elmina, which affected the Dutch transfer of the coast to Britain in 1872.
