Gold Coast
The Gold Coast was the coastal region of present-day Ghana, named for its gold trade with Europeans. European forts along the coast traded with the Ashanti Empire, and the region became a British colony that, after the conquest of Asante, included the Ashanti lands and gained independence as Ghana in 1957.
