Gold Coast Colony

1821 CE – 1957 CE · capital Accra

The British colony on the coast of modern Ghana, which grew from a string of forts into the first sub-Saharan African colony to win independence, as Ghana in 1957.

Origins

In 1821 the British crown took over the forts of the Company of Merchants on the Gold Coast and placed them under Charles MacCarthy in Sierra Leone. He was killed fighting the Ashanti Empire in 1824. George Maclean, president of the merchant council from 1830, made peace with Ashanti in 1831 and extended British jurisdiction among the Fante, formalised in the Bond of 1844.

Rule and society

Britain bought the Danish forts in 1850 and the Dutch Gold Coast in 1872, and after defeating Ashanti in 1874 declared a crown colony, with its capital at Accra from 1877. The colony's economy rested on gold, timber and above all cocoa, of which it became the largest exporter in the world. Governor Gordon Guggisberg built Takoradi harbour and Achimota School in the 1920s.

Decline and legacy

Riots in 1948 and the campaign of Kwame Nkrumah's Convention People's Party led to self-government. On 6 March 1957 the colony, with the Ashanti Colony, the Northern Territories and British Togoland, became independent as Ghana.
