Person
Kwame Nkrumah
Kwame Nkrumah was the leader of the Gold Coast's independence movement and the first prime minister and president of Ghana, which became independent in 1957. He chose the name Ghana in tribute to the medieval Ghana Empire, though the old empire lay far to the north-west. The choice reflects the empire's lasting symbolic importance in African history.
