Ghana Empire

Also known as Wagadou

The Ghana Empire, known internally as Wagadou, was a Soninke state in the western Sahel that flourished from around the eighth to the eleventh century. Controlling trade between the goldfields to the south and trans-Saharan routes, it became famous for its wealth. It declined in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and its lands were later absorbed into the Mali Empire.
