Sahel
The Sahel is the semi-arid belt of savannah and steppe stretching across Africa along the southern edge of the Sahara, from Senegal to Sudan. It formed a meeting zone between desert traders and the agricultural societies of the south, and its trading cities were linked to trans-Saharan commerce. Several empires arose there, including Ghana, Mali, Songhai, Kanem-Bornu, Jolof, Wadai and the Darfur Sultanate.
