Mali
Mali refers both to the medieval Mali Empire and to the region of the upper and middle Niger in West Africa, now the Republic of Mali. The area was a centre of trans-Saharan trade in gold and salt. It was successively dominated by the Ghana, Mali and Songhai empires, and the Mandinka heartland of Mali also gave rise to the Kaabu Empire to the west.
