Niger River
The Niger River is the principal river of West Africa, flowing in a great arc from the Guinea highlands through the Sahel to the Atlantic in Nigeria. It was a vital artery for agriculture, trade and military movement. The Mali and Songhai empires grew along its middle course, while the Benin, Oyo and Sokoto states lay in its lower basin.
