Songhai Empire
The Songhai Empire was a West African state centred on Gao on the middle Niger, which expanded in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries under Sunni Ali and Askia Muhammad. It controlled Timbuktu, Djenné and the trans-Saharan trade and became one of the largest states in African history. It was defeated by a Moroccan invasion at the Battle of Tondibi in 1591.
