Songhai conquest of Timbuktu
The Songhai conquest of Timbuktu took place in 1468, when Sunni Ali took the city from the Tuareg, who had held it since Mali's decline. Accounts of the Songhai Empire treat it as the first of Sunni Ali's major acquisitions. With Djenné, it gave Songhai control of the key trading and scholarly centres of the middle Niger.
