Songea

Songea is a town in southern Tanzania and the capital of Ruvuma Region. It takes its name from Songea Mbano, a Ngoni chief, and the surrounding highlands were settled in the nineteenth century by Ngoni groups who had migrated from southern Africa. The area was a centre of resistance in the Maji Maji rebellion against German rule in 1905–1907, after which Songea and other leaders were executed.
