Sunni Islam
Sunni Islam is the largest branch of Islam, whose followers accept the legitimacy of the first four caliphs. It was the religion of states such as the Umayyad Caliphate, the Seljuk Empire, the Ayyubid Empire and the Ottoman Empire. The Safavid Empire's adoption of Shia Islam made it a rival of the Sunni Ottomans.
