Sunni–Shia divide
The Sunni–Shia divide is the split between the two main branches of Islam, which originated in the dispute over the succession to the Prophet Muhammad. Accounts of the Rashidun Caliphate trace its origins to the succession debate at Saqifah. Accounts of the Safavid Empire note how Safavid Shiism deepened the divide.
