Shia Islam

Also known as Shia

Shia Islam is one of the two main branches of Islam, whose adherents hold that leadership of the community belonged to Ali ibn Abi Talib and his descendants. It emerged from the succession disputes described in the Rashidun Caliphate and Umayyad Caliphate profiles. The Safavid Empire made Twelver Shia Islam the state religion of Iran, and the Zand and Ayyubid profiles also refer to it.
