Saqifah

632 CE · 7th century

Saqifah refers to the meeting held in 632 CE at the Saqifah, a covered gathering place of the Banu Sa'ida in Medina, where companions of the Prophet Muhammad debated the succession within hours of his death. The gathering resulted in the selection of Abu Bakr as the first caliph. Accounts of the Rashidun Caliphate treat it as the founding moment of the caliphate and as the origin of the dispute over Ali's claim that later divided Sunni and Shia Muslims.
