Samanid Empire

819 CE – 999 CE · capital Bukhara

A Persian dynasty ruling from Bukhara that revived New Persian as a literary language and made Transoxiana a centre of Islamic learning.

Origins

The Samanids descended from Saman Khuda, a Persian landowner near Balkh who converted to Islam. In 819 the Abbasid caliph al-Ma'mun gave his four grandsons governorships of Samarkand, Ferghana, Chach and Herat. Nasr ibn Ahmad unified their holdings, and his brother Isma'il ibn Ahmad defeated the Saffarids in 900, ruling Transoxiana and Khurasan as Abbasid governors.

Rule and society

From Bukhara the emirs ran a sophisticated bureaucracy of divans modelled on the caliphate, with powerful viziers such as al-Bal'ami and al-Jayhani. Silver dirhams from Samanid mints flowed to Scandinavia through the Volga trade in slaves and furs. The court patronised the poet Rudaki and commissioned Persian translations, while scholars such as Ibn Sina and al-Razi worked under their rule. Sunni Islam spread to the Turkic steppe.

Decline and legacy

Turkic slave generals gained power in the 10th century, and the Ghaznavid Empire took Khurasan. In 999 the Kara-Khanid Khanate captured Bukhara and ended the dynasty. The Samanids are remembered in Tajikistan as founders of Tajik statehood.
