Samarkand
Samarkand is an ancient city in modern Uzbekistan and one of the major centres of the Silk Road in Central Asia. It was captured by the Mongols, fell within the Chagatai Khanate and became the capital of the Timurid Empire, where Timur and his successors adorned it with monumental architecture. It also features in the Khwarazmian Empire profile and in the Delhi Sultanate profile, which notes that Timur carried artisans there after sacking Delhi in 1398.
