Timurid Empire
The Timurid Empire was the state founded by Timur in the late fourteenth century, centred on Transoxiana, Iran and Afghanistan, with capitals at Samarkand and later Herat. After Timur's death it fragmented among his descendants but became famous for its patronage of Persian art, architecture, astronomy and literature. It was eventually overrun by the Uzbeks, and the Timurid prince Babur went on to found the Mughal Empire.
