Mughal Empire

Also known as Mughals, Mughal dynasty, Mughal

The Mughal Empire was a dynasty of Timurid descent that ruled much of the Indian subcontinent from 1526, when Babur defeated the Lodi sultan at Panipat. Under Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb it became one of the richest states in the world. It was weakened by Maratha wars and Nader Shah's invasion of 1739, and ended under British rule in 1857.
