Rajpipla State

1340 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Rajpipla

A Gohil Rajput state in the Narmada valley of Gujarat, the largest in the Rewa Kantha Agency, whose last Maharaja won the English Derby in 1934.

Origins

Tradition holds that a Gohil Rajput prince inherited the hill country south of the Narmada from his maternal grandfather, a Parmar chief, in the mid-14th century, founding the dynasty that ruled until 1948.

Rule and society

Rajpipla was hilly and forested, with a large Bhil and Vasava population. It faced pressure from the Gujarat Sultanate, the Mughals and later the Gaekwads of Baroda State, to whom it paid tribute. Under the British it was the leading state of the Rewa Kantha Agency. Maharaja Vijaysinhji built a new palace, and his horse Windsor Lad won the Derby in 1934.

Decline and legacy

Rajpipla merged into Bombay State in 1948 and is now in Narmada district, Gujarat.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
