1780– · 18th century · Also known as The Derby Stakes

The Epsom Derby is a flat horse race for three-year-old colts and fillies run each year over about a mile and a half at Epsom Downs in Surrey, England. First run in 1780 and named after the 12th Earl of Derby, it is the most prestigious race of the British flat season. In 1934 it was won by Windsor Lad, owned by the Maharaja of Rajpipla, the first Indian owner to win it.
