Bukhara
Bukhara is a city in present-day Uzbekistan, one of the great oasis centres of the Silk Road and of Islamic learning in Central Asia. It was sacked by the Mongols during the destruction of the Khwarazmian Empire and later fell under the Chagatai and Timurid empires. Nader Shah of the Afsharid Empire subdued it in 1740, and in the nineteenth century it became a protectorate of the Russian Empire.
