Isma'il ibn Ahmad

849–907 · 9th century · Also known as Ismail Samani, Ismail I of the Samanids

Isma'il ibn Ahmad, known as Ismail Samani, was the Samanid emir who made his family the rulers of Transoxiana and Khurasan. Governor of Bukhara under his brother Nasr, he defeated the Saffarid Amr ibn al-Layth in 900 and ruled from Bukhara as governor for the Abbasid caliph, with wide autonomy. His mausoleum in Bukhara is a masterpiece of early Islamic architecture, and he is honoured in Tajikistan as a founder of Tajik statehood.
