Baghdad

Baghdad is a city on the Tigris in Iraq, founded in 762 by the Abbasid caliph al-Mansur as the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate. It became one of the largest cities in the world and a great centre of trade and learning. It came under Seljuk control in 1055 and was sacked by the Mongols in 1258, after which it formed part of the Ilkhanate and was later contested by the Safavids and Ottomans.
