Mali Empire

Also known as Mali empires

The Mali Empire was a West African empire founded by Sundiata Keita around 1235, which flourished until the fifteenth century. It controlled trans-Saharan trade in gold and salt and reached its height under Mansa Musa, whose pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324 became famous. It succeeded the Ghana Empire, and its decline was followed by the rise of the Songhai Empire.
