Mecca

Mecca is a city in the Hejaz region of Arabia, the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad and the holiest city of Islam. Pilgrimage to Mecca connected Muslim empires across the world, and rulers of the Mali, Songhai and Sokoto states made the journey. Control of Mecca brought great prestige, as for the Ottoman Empire after 1517.
