Sudan
Sudan refers both to the modern country on the Nile and, historically, to the bilad al-Sudan, the broad belt of West and Central African savannah south of the Sahara. Arab geographers used the term for the lands of the Ghana, Mali, Songhai and Kanem-Bornu empires. The term appears in many profiles, including those of the Sokoto Caliphate, the Darfur Sultanate and the Oyo Empire.
