A-Group chiefdom of Qustul

3300 BCE – 2900 BCE (approx.) · capital Qustul

An A-Group chiefdom in Lower Nubia whose rich royal tombs at Qustul rivalled those of predynastic Egypt.

Origins

The A-Group people lived in Lower Nubia, between the First and Second Cataracts, from about 3800 BCE. By c. 3300 BCE a ruling elite had emerged around Qustul, near the modern Egypt-Sudan border, growing rich as middlemen in the trade between Egypt and the south in ivory, ebony, incense and animal skins.

Rule and society

Cemetery L at Qustul contains large tombs with Egyptian stone vessels, imported pottery and gold. A carved incense burner shows a crowned figure resembling an Egyptian king, which led some scholars to argue that pharaonic kingship began here; most now see an elite sharing Upper Egyptian symbols. The A-Group made fine, thin-walled painted pottery and lived by herding, farming and trade.

Decline and legacy

Around 3000 to 2900 BCE the kings of Early Dynastic Egypt campaigned into Nubia, and a rock inscription at Gebel Sheikh Suleiman records an attack. The A-Group then disappears and Lower Nubia appears thinly settled until the C-Group arrived. Egyptians long called the region Ta-Seti, 'Land of the Bow'.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
