Niger Delta
The Niger Delta is the wide coastal delta of the Niger River in southern Nigeria, a region of creeks, mangroves and fertile soils. The Benin Empire's agricultural base in the delta region and surrounding forest produced yams, palm oil and kola nuts. These products supported both local consumption and long-distance trade.
