Niger bend
The Niger bend is the great northward curve of the Niger River in present-day Mali, where the river reaches the edge of the Sahara near Timbuktu and Gao. Its waterways and trading cities were key strategic assets. The Mali Empire extended its control there in the late thirteenth century, and the Songhai Empire's river fleet later gave it dominance over the region.
