Kingdom of Agbor
Origins
Agbor lies in the forest between Benin City and the Niger, among the Ika, an Igboid-speaking people with strong ties to the Edo. Its kingship is believed to date from around the 15th century, when Benin influence spread east toward the river, and its traditions combine Edo and Igbo elements.
Rule and society
The Dein of Agbor ruled with title-holding chiefs and age-grade associations over yam-farming villages. Agbor paid tribute to the Oba of the Benin Empire and adopted Benin titles and regalia, while keeping its own dynasty and local religious practices.
Decline and legacy
After the British conquest of Benin in 1897, Agbor came under British control and was incorporated into Southern Nigeria. The Dein of Agbor remains the traditional ruler of Agbor in Delta State.
Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
