Wadai Empire
The Wadai Empire was a Muslim sultanate in the eastern Sahel, in what is now eastern Chad, founded around 1611 when Abd al-Karim overthrew the Tunjur rulers. Its capital was initially at Wara. Wadai grew powerful through the trans-Saharan trade, especially the route north to Benghazi, and through slave raiding, and it remained independent until French conquest in the early twentieth century.
