Kingdom of Akyem Kotoku
Origins
Akyem Kotoku was one of the three Akyem states formed in the Birim and Pra forests by the 17th century, alongside Akyem Abuakwa and Akyem Bosome. Its ruling house traced descent from the Akan clans that migrated south from the region of Adansi.
Rule and society
The Kotokuhene ruled with divisional chiefs, queen mothers and councils in the usual Akan form. The kingdom mined and traded gold. In 1730 it joined Akyem Abuakwa and the Ga in defeating Akwamu, and it fought the Ashanti Empire repeatedly over the following century, at times being driven from its lands.
Decline and legacy
Akyem Kotoku allied with Britain against Ashanti and came under British rule with the Gold Coast Colony in 1874. Its capital was fixed at Oda in the 19th century, and the Kotokuhene still reigns there.
Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
