Cuffy

d. 1763 · 18th century · Also known as Coffy, Kofi

Cuffy, or Coffy, was an enslaved man of West African origin who led the Berbice slave uprising in the Dutch colony of Berbice, in present-day Guyana. The revolt began on 23 February 1763, and the rebels held most of the colony for nearly a year before Dutch troops suppressed it; Cuffy died during the rising amid divisions among its leaders. He is Guyana's national hero, and the uprising's anniversary is its Republic Day.
