Abel Aubert du Petit-Thouars

1793–1864 · 19th century

Abel Aubert du Petit-Thouars was a French naval officer who extended French power in the Pacific. In 1842 he took possession of the Marquesas Islands and imposed a French protectorate on Tahiti under Queen Pōmare IV, and in 1843 he declared Tahiti annexed, a step disavowed by the French government. The resistance that followed led to the Franco-Tahitian War of 1844–1847.
