Pōmare IV

1813–1877 · 19th century · Also known as Queen Pōmare

Pōmare IV was queen of Tahiti for fifty years, from 1827 to 1877. Her reign was dominated by rivalry between British Protestant missionaries and French Catholic priests, which led France to impose a protectorate in 1842 and to fight the Franco-Tahitian War of 1844–1847. She kept her throne under French protection, and her son Pōmare V ceded the kingdom in 1880.
